Here are the memoirs of Thomas Yates telling of his life from birth near Wigan, moving to Skelmersdale in the early 1900's, his spell in the Yorkshire, Skelmersdale and local coalmines, and working a smallholding. This is an excellent story and captures the life and conditions of that time.
