This picture of the Sirkers Arms baffled us for aged as no one knew where it once stood.
Enter Dave Marsh who saw the picture and our appeal for information and he gave us the following:
The pub referred to is the SINKERS ARMS and was situated at 153/155 Sandy Lane which I believe was between Elson Rd and Peel Street. The pub was just up from the Plough and the Queen's Arms and it had been an Inn from at least 1881 when it was under the control of a John and Elizabeth Rotherham. Henry Latham, a Bickerstaffe born miner married an Irish girl, Ellen and they were running it in 1891. By 1901 Ellen, presumably widowed, had remarried to a Hungarian by the name of Joseph Constance, who was listed as publican on the 1901 census. She was again widowed by 1902, hence the name over the door, Ellen Constance. This probably dates your photograph as 1902 or later. keep up the good work, it's all of great interest.
